Why Ana De Armas Next Big Movie Is Already Controversial

Ana de Armas has three big movies slated for release this year, but even prior to its premiere, one of them has already faced controversies.

Even prior to its release, the next big movie of Ana de Armas is already tagged as controversial — here’s why that’s the case for Blonde. Following the generally positive reaction to her role in No Time to Die, the final outing of Daniel Craig’s James Bond, Ana de Armas’ career is noticeably gaining momentum. This year alone, the Golden Globe-nominated actress has three films set for release, and although none of them has firm premiere dates yet at the moment, one has already garnered mixed reception due to its sensitive matter and plot execution.

Although de Armas has only recently gained international recognition, she has been acting since her teenage years in Cuba. From the age of 16, she has landed the central parts of various films and television series, including Una rosa de Francia, El Internado, Hispania, La Leyenda, and Por Un Puñado de Besos. After moving to Los Angeles in 2014, she had decided to study English, thus opening her up to more opportunities and avoiding getting pigeonholed as a Latina actress.

De Armas’ first roles in Hollywood involved her starring in the Keanu Reeves-led movies, Knock, Knock and Exposed. Her mainstream break came with her roles as Joi in the 2017 sci-fi thriller Blade Runner 2049, and Marta Cabrera in the 2019 ensemble mystery film Knives Out. Since then, de Armas showcased her charismatic acting, until she eventually got more leading roles in bigger productions.

What Ana De Armas’ Next Movie Is

2022 marks a big year for Ana de Armas, as she has three films to be released. First on the list is Deep Water, an erotic thriller film directed by Adrian Lyne. De Armas stars alongside Ben Affleck as a couple with a complicated marriage and deadly affairs. After getting its premiere date moved twice, the film is supposedly scheduled for a January 2022 theatrical release. However, in December 2021, Deadline has reported that Deep Water is headed to streaming on Hulu in the US and Amazon Prime Video internationally.

Another de Armas movie this 2022 is the Russo Brothers-directed The Gray Man. Also starring Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans, the action thriller is based on the 2009 Mark Greaney novel of the same name. As it is set to establish a cinematic franchise, it has a $200-million budget, making it the most expensive Netflix production to this day. In an interview with Variety, Joe Russo shares that the film might be released in the summer. Additionally, de Armas takes on the life of social icon Marilyn Monroe in another upcoming Netflix movie, Blonde. Joining her in supporting roles are Adrien Brody, Bobby Cannavale, and Julianne Nicholson. However, even before Blonde gets a concrete release date, it has already stirred controversy.

Why Ana De Armas Marilyn Monroe Movie Is Controversial

Written and directed by Andrew Dominik, Blonde is an adaptation of Joyce Carol Oates’ 2000 novel of the same name. While the film has been delayed numerous times even before the pandemic, Netflix reportedly moved its release date due to its overly graphic content. Since Blonde’s source material is a fictionalized chronicle of Marilyn Monroe’s life, it is not entirely biographical, and certain creative adjustments are made. In fact, a notable scene in Oates’ reimagining is Monroe’s first movie audition. Although it leads to her career being launched, that audition, unfortunately, involves harassment and sexual violence, which is then translated onscreen. Because the film has scenes depicting these sensitive themes, Netflix has awarded Blonde an NC-17 rating. Hopefully, when Ana de Armas’ Marilyn Monroe movie gets released, it will tastefully portray the struggles — no matter how fictionalized — of the Hollywood legend.
