Halle Berry, who played Catwoman in the 2004 film of the same name, gives some advice to Zoë Kravitz as she takes on the DC character in The Batman.
As Zoë Kravitz is about to become the next cinematic version of Catwoman, Halle Berry offers some advice to The Batman star. Matt Reeves is rebooting the Batman franchise once again with Robert Pattinson as the titular hero. While the story will focus on a Bruce Wayne in his second year as the Dark Knight, he won’t be Gotham City’s only crime-fighter. Almost ten years after Anne Hathaway portrayed Selina Kyle in The Dark Knight Rises, Kravitz is taking on the Catwoman role in the upcoming movie.
While Catwoman has appeared in multiple Batman projects, only one iteration of the DC anti-heroine has her own film. Initially meant to be a spinoff for Michelle Pfeiffer’s character from Batman Returns, 2004’s Catwoman, starring Berry, became a completely different project. Due to development hell, Pfeiffer departed the project, which caused Warner Bros. to take some creative liberties with it. Rather than focusing on Selina, the story followed a new character named Patience Phillips, who takes on the moniker. Aside from the name, Catwoman had little to do with the actual comics and became one of the biggest bombs in comic book movie history.
The film’s unpleasant history isn’t stopping Berry from sharing some positive advice for the new Catwoman, however. In a new interview with Pop Culture, Berry is asked if she had any words for Kravitz as she takes on the role in The Batman. Not only is she more than thrilled for her successor, but she stresses that the actor should just focus on making the role of her own.
Despite the many issues Catwoman had back in 2004, Berry was never the problem, as it all came down to the script and overall direction. Regardless of who had been cast as Patience, no one could have elevated the material that she was forced to work with. Intermediate, Berry’s words of wisdom to Kravitz are spot on here, and The Batman trailers have already shown that the latter is doing something refreshing with her Selina Kyle.
Even though Catwoman has been part of many Batman films already, The Batman is attempting something new. Having Selina be part of the story in the first film already sets the foundation for her character arc throughout this potential trilogy. Depending on the reception, it also wouldn’t be shocking if Kravitz is the next cast member to get her own The Batman spinoff series on HBO Max, joining Reeves’ previously announced The Penguin and GCPD. As the film is less than a month away from hitting theaters, it will be exciting to see Kravitz’s Catwoman in The Batman and what she brings to the character’s overall media legacy.
