Jim Carrey Returns As The Cable Guy In New Super Bowl Commercial

Jim Carrey suits up as Chip Douglas, the titular Cable Guy from the 1996 comedy, in a new Verizon commercial airing during the Super Bowl.

Jim Carrey reprises his titular role from The Cable Guy for a new Super Bowl commercial. The famous funnyman is best known for the multiple iconic comedies he made throughout the 1990s, such as Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber. It was his dramatic performances in The Truman Show and Man on the Moon near the latter end of the decade that signaled a turning point in his career.

Before those two highly-acclaimed performances, Carrey’s comedy took a noticeably darker turn in 1996 with The Cable Guy. Produced by Judd Apatow and directed by Ben Stiller, the film follows Carrey as a lonely and mentally disturbed cable guy named Chip Douglas desperately searching for human connection who in turn, intrudes in the life of one of his customers, an architect played by Matthew Broderick. Though The Cable Guy received a mixed reception from critics, it was a success at the box office, grossing over double its budget, and has only gained a larger cult following since. Its cast also includes Leslie Mann, Jack Black, George Segal, Diane Baker, Owen Wilson, David Cross, Andy Dick, and Bob Odenkirk.

Now, a sneak peek at an upcoming Verizon Super Bowl ad shows Carrey returning as the Cable Guy from the 1996 film. The full commercial will air Sunday night during the game and promote the wireless network’s 5G Internet services. Though the 10-second teaser is brief, it does reveal Carrey suiting back up as Chip Douglas, replete with the character’s signature tool kit and drill. Check out the video in the space below:

This is just one of many Super Bowl ads teased online in recent days that audiences can expect to see this Sunday during the Super Bowl, the most-watched event on American television. This year, the list of celebrity spots include married couple Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost in an Alexa ad, Arnold Schwarzenegger as Zeus for BMW, and Lindsay Lohan and William Shatner working out at Planet Fitness. Now, Carrey’s name can be added to the lineup.

Other than returning as Chip Douglas for a Verizon commercial, Carrey is also set to reprise another one of his iconic villain roles as Dr. Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which debuts in theaters this spring. Look for Paramount to capitalize on the opportunity to preview the film during the Super Bowl. If not, Carrey will still be seen reprising his role from The Cable Guy in the full Verizon spot during Super Bowl LVI on February 13.
