Everyone’s Been Saying Denzel Washington’s Name Wrong

In a viral tweet, acclaimed actor Denzel Washington said the correct pronunciation of his first name, shocking audiences after all these years.

Acclaimed actor Denzel Washington corrects the long-standing mispronunciation of his first name. Washington is a world-renowned actor with a career stretching back to the late 1970s. He caught the world’s attention in 1987’s Cry Freedom, where his role as Steve Biko landed him his first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. While he didn’t win for Cry Freedom, Washington quickly found himself nominated again two years later for 1989’s Glory, where he landed his first Oscar win for Best Supporting Actor. Following Glory, Washington’s career flourished, with the actor landing numerous roles in acclaimed films.

Washington took on the role of Malcolm X in Spike Lee’s 1992 film, earning him his first Best Actor Academy Award nomination. While he didn’t win for Malcolm X, it was far from the last time Washington would be nominated. Washington would be nominated for another six Best Actor Academy Awards for films like The Hurricane, Flight, Fences, and his current nomination for The Tragedy of Macbeth. His second Oscar win, and first for Best Actor, came from 2001’s Training Day, which saw Washington in a villainous role. With such an illustrious career, it may come as a shock that the world has been mispronouncing Washington’s first name the whole time.

In a recent viral tweet from Kevín (@KevOnStage), he comments on a clip from The Graham Norton Show where Washington corrects the pronunciation of Denzel. According to Washington, the correct pronunciation of Denzel is closer to Denzil. Washington shares his father’s name, as his full name is Denzel Washington Jr., and he states this often caused confusion in his home growing up. Because of the chaos, his mother began pronouncing his name as the world knows it. Even more fascinating, Washington’s correction of his name on the show occurred in 2013, but it didn’t seem to land with most audiences until Kevín’s viral Tweet. Check out Kevín’s tweet and the original clip from The Graham Norton Show below:

Actors going by different names is nothing new, like Vin Diesel, whose real name is Mark Sinclair, or Tom Cruise, whose name is Thomas Mapother. However, that’s not exactly the case with Washington, who never changed his name, but instead allowed its mispronunciation to persist. Given that it stems back to his childhood, the mispronunciation of Denzel has likely never bothered Washington, as his mother called him the same. Still, Washington’s popularity has led many to name children after him, where the name continues to be pronounced Denzel, falling in line with the misconception.

Despite the confusion surrounding his first name, Washington continues to be one of the most renowned actors working today. He has even garnered acclaim as a director, helming Antwone Fisher, The Great Debaters, and Fences. Washington currently stars in The Tragedy of Macbeth, directed by Joel Cohen, which could earn him another Oscar from the Academy Awards next month.
