Chris Pine and Thandie Newton’s Sex Scenes in ‘All the Old Knives’ (Video)

Warning: This article contains spoilers for All the Old Knives on Amazon Prime. Just in case you’re watching it for the plot.

Nothing ups the stakes in a sex scene like having just saved your lover from certain death, or finding out that your lover maybe—definitely—betrayed you. All the Old Knives, the espionage thriller that was released on Amazon Prime last week, manages to combine both of those high stakes situations into Chris Pine and Thandiwe Newton‘s steamy sex scene. The result is pure, desperate passion from both involved parties, and it’s very hot.

The setup of Pine and Newton’s tortured romance in All the Old Knives is this: CIA agents Henry (Pine) and Celia (Newton) are colleagues and lovers. But one fateful day, a terrible (fictional) terrorist attack leads to the death of every passenger on Royal Jordanian Flight 127. From the perspective of the CIA, which fails to execute a rescue mission, it’s a huge blunder. Celia and Henry break up. Henry stays at the agency. Celia moves away, gets married, and has children.

Ten years later, Henry’s boss at the CIA, Vick (Laurence Fishburne), calls him in with some good news and some bad news. The good news is that the CIA caught the man responsible for orchestrating the Flight 127 attack, Ilyas Shishani. The bad news is that Shishani told the CIA that he had help from someone within the agency. Now it’s Henry’s job to investigate his old colleagues to find out who the mole is. And then, Henry is told, he will have to kill said mole—because the CIA doesn’t want the public embarrassment. Meaning Henry may have to pay an assassin to murder his ex-lover.

Henry meets Celia at a restaurant in wine country, California, and a charged conversation ensues. Through a series of flashbacks, we learn more details about the Flight 127 terrorist attack, and about Henry and Celia’s relationship. Eventually, their dinner conversation leads the two ex-lovers to recall their last night together. After the hellish day at work, and after Celia receives the news that their colleague on the plane is dead, she comes home to Henry with her eyes blazing. As soon as Henry realizes what Celia wants, he doesn’t waste any time stripping down—and yes, you do get to see Chris Pine’s butt. For those who have been swooning over him in a Starfleet uniform since the 2009 Star Trek reboot film, this is an unequivocal win.

But more than the fact that Pine and Newton are both objectively attractive people, what makes this scene hot is the pure desperation they both bring to their characters. Henry, as we will soon find out, has just made a life-changing decision to betray the CIA in order to save Celia’s life. Celia doesn’t know about the life-saving thing but suspects someone has betrayed the CIA. Both of them feel broken, and want—no, need—the physical comfort of the person they love most in the world. Their movements are frantic, as if they somehow know this will be the last time. At one point, Pine even sneaks his thumb into Newton’s mouth to suck on—OK, Captain Kirk!

And, of course, it is the last time. While Henry is in the shower, Celia sees an incoming call on his cell phone from the same suspicious phone number that she found in the CIA call logs. She knows that Henry is the mole, so she leaves without a word. But, as a final gesture of love, she never rats him out.

Of course, their ten-year reunion doesn’t end happily. It turns out the CIA knew Henry was the mole, and this whole thing was a set-up so that Celia could kill Henry quietly. It’s a tragic end for both, but, hey—at least they had one night of really great sex.
