This week seems to be Thor: Love and Thunder week. After the long-awaited trailer for the upcoming movie finally arrived, fans got to see Natalie Portman for the first time in full, live-action glory as the new Mighty Thor. Now, the actress is giving fans another chance to see her, this time in her own poster for the movie.

First ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Trailer Reveals Natalie Portman as New Thor

Natalie Portman posted the image to her official Instagram account earlier today. Fittingly, it’s pretty much a perfect echo of what her co-star Chris Hemsworth put on his own Instagram on Monday. You can see the poster featuring Portman below, followed by the Hemsworth poster for comparison.

As you can tell if you compare the posters carefully, the script just above the Marvel Studios logo is different. On the Hemsworth poster, it reads “The one and only.” Meanwhile, the poster featuring Natalie Portman reads “The one is not the only.” Portman tags Hemsworth in her caption and sends him the message “And you thought you were the one and only…”

In spite of theories that the Natalie Portman version of Jane Foster’s Mighty Thor would be from a different corner of Marvel’s Multiverse, the signs in early merchandising as well as Monday’s trailer seem to indicate that this isn’t the case. As you can see in the image below, the surface of Jane Foster’s Mjolnir is covered with cracks. This suggests that this is the same version of Mjolnir that was smashed by Hela (Cate Blanchett) in 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok which has somehow reassembled.

The circumstances of the ascendance of Jane Foster to the title of Thor won’t exactly be the same as what unfolded in the comics. Fittingly, Gorr the God Butcher had a lot to do with that story. In the 2014 comic book storyline Original Sin, with a whisper Nick Fury convinces Thor that Gorr was right when he said all gods were unworthy of mortal admiration. Believing himself unworthy rendered Thor unworthy of Mjolnir. It was Jane Foster who claimed the hammer for herself in the aftermath, and during her time as Thor, her male counterpart was known chiefly as Odinson.

Fans had plenty of reason to be surprised when it was announced Natalie Portman was returning to the role of Jane Foster for another chapter of the Thor franchise. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actress had campaigned hard to get Patty Jenkins hired to direct 2013’s Thor: The Dark World, and when Jenkins was fired, Portman supposedly was close to following her, and only stayed on board out of contractual obligations. In a brief chat with Variety in 2019, Taika Waititi said he got Portman to come back by asking her a simple question. “I just said to her ‘Are you interested in coming back to this thing, but doing something really different?’” Waititi said. “No one wants to keep repeating themselves, and no one wants to play the same characters all the time… Especially in most of these films, if you’re not a superhero… do you really wanna keep doing that? I mean, I wouldn’t. I’d want to come back and change things up.”

We’ll get to see exactly how she changes things up on July 8, 2022 when Thor: Love and Thunder hits theaters. Along with Hemsworth and Portman, the film stars Tessa Thompson, Russell Crowe, Christian Bale, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Sean Gunn, Karen Pom Klementieff, Jaimie Alexander, Sean Gunn, Karen Gillan, and more.
