Scream 2022’s First Victim Got A Sweet Welcome From Drew Barrymore

Jenna Ortega, one of Scream 2022’s stars, speaks about original Scream star Drew Barrymore, and the message she sent her prior to the film’s release.

Scream 2022 star Jenna Ortega says she received a sweet welcome from the original film’s first victim, Drew Barrymore. The fifth installment of the beloved slasher series arrived in early 2022, and for the first time in its existence, franchise creator and director Wes Craven was not involved. The iconic horror filmmaker passed away in 2015, leaving many fans concerned that the Scream series had come to an end.

To be fair, had Craven’s death resulted in the end of Scream, it wouldn’t have been that bad of a run. Three sequels were derived from the original 1996 film and although there’s a wide range of opinions over which of these films is the best, it’s generally accepted that the first Scream film is the strongest of the entire series. That film featured Drew Barrymore in its opening minutes, in what is a perfect representation of the slasher genre. Though killed off long before the film’s full cast of characters is even introduced, Barrymore’s performance still resonates with Scream fans today. It was this reverence for the past that filmmakers Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett sought to pay homage to in the fifth Scream entry.

The desire to assure fans that Scream was in capable hands culminated in several references to the original film as well as to Craven himself. This is particularly evident in Scream 2022’s opening sequence, in which Ortega finds herself dealing with the return of the dreaded Ghostface killer. In a recent interview with Stylecaster, Ortega explained that shortly after a remote interview on The Drew Barrymore Show before Scream 2022 was released, Barrymore sent her a sweet welcome to the Scream family:

“I didn’t talk to her then, but she gave me a message through an email that was really sweet and endearing. She’s a part of Scream. She’s the principal. She’s part of the core. I have yet to talk to her in person face to face, but I adore her.”

The biggest difference between Ortega’s Tara Carpenter and Barrymore’s Casey Becker is that Ortega’s character does not die at the hands of Ghostface. As a matter of fact, the Tara character breaks new ground for the franchise by being the first opening sequence victim to not die. Arguably the most disturbing and downright frightening death in the entire series is Becker’s and it’s so memorable that 25 years later, a new generation of fans (and actors) are still fascinated by it. It’s understandable, then, why Barrymore taking the time to message Ortega meant so much to the 19-year-old star.

With Scream 6 having already been announced and set to start filming this summer, it will be interesting to see just what happens with Ortega’s Tara Carpenter. Her opening sequence in Scream 2022 was enough to get fans paying attention, and her respect for both the franchise and Barrymore makes her exactly the sort of star that’s perfect for this new era of Scream. Obviously, it’s impossible to know if Craven would feel the same way, but those involved in the series, as well as its fans, feel confident that he would.
