Why Florence Pugh Replaced Olivia Wilde As The Star In Her New Movie

Olivia Wilde opens up about the reason she gave up her starring role in Don’t Worry Darling, which she is also directing, to Florence Pugh.

Olivia Wilde was originally the star of her upcoming psychological thriller film Don’t Worry Darlingbut Florence Pugh ended up taking her place. The film marks Wilde’s second as director, following her critically acclaimed debut with 2019 comedy Booksmart, which earned $25 million at the box office. For her second film, Wilde decided to stray away from comedy with the darker and more sinister drama Don’t Worry Darling.

Pugh plays Alice in the film, a young housewife who moves into a mysterious experimental community known as the Victory Project with her husband Jack (played by Harry Styles). Themes explored in Don’t Worry Darling include gender roles, cults, psychological conditioning, and feminism. Other actors featured in the movie include Chris Pine, Gemma Chan, Nick Kroll, and Wilde herself in a supporting role. Though Wilde’s initial starring role helped her sell the film in an impressive bidding war, she ultimately stepped down from the lead spot.

In an interview with Variety, Wilde explains feeling that something was missing when she was set to star. At 38, she’s still in her prime, but she preferred to imagine lead couple Alice and Jack as younger newly-weds. And though the studio had someone else in mind for the role, Wilde knew who she wanted to take her place right away: Pugh. See what she had to say about the choice below:

“There was something about the youthfulness, the innocence, that really made sense for the story. If I was Alice, I was like, ‘Well, I’m going to be with a Jack who’s my age or older, and now we’re in a different age bracket. I had been blown the f*** away by [Pugh]. I loved [Midsommar], but I loved her. I was just like, ‘Well, she’s extraordinary. She’s clearly the most exciting young actress working today.’”

Wilde’s comments are a credit to Pugh’s talent, but also speak to her commitment to telling the best possible story, even if it doesn’t include her as the star. In an interesting twist, Pugh was originally in talks for the role of Bunny, who is now portrayed by Wilde. The actors’ swap is sure to pay off in the movie, as will Wilde’s thorough understanding of the story she hopes to tell. The age bracket, as Wilde says, of the film’s central couple will go a long way in getting audiences on their side, which will then make the film’s sinister twists and turns all the more urgent.

Wilde is not alone in her feelings about Pugh’s star power. An actor with a background in Shakespeare, she rose to international fame with her role as Dani in the twisted A24 horror film Midsommar. After that film, her stint in Greta Gerwig’s Little Women earned her an Oscar nomination. After playing Natasha Romanoff’s sister in Marvel’s Black Widow and Hawkeye, her future in the MCU is bright. With several films lined up after Don’t Worry Darling‘s debut, including sci-fi movie Dune: Part Two, Pugh is showing no signs of slowing her meteoric rise, which is good news for moviegoers.
