Anitta’s Fiery VMAs Wardrobe Was an Ode to Brazil

1 / 25

Anitta made history at last night’s MTV VMAs when she became the first Brazilian to take home an award from the annual ceremony (she won “Best Latin” for her hit song, “Envolver”). If that wasn’t impressive enough, she also wowed on the red carpet in a fiery couture look and performed on the mainstage. “For me, the most exciting part about being at the VMAs this year was to be a representative of Brazil,” Anitta tells Vogue. “This year particularly, the VMAs seemed to represent and cater to fans all around the world, and that’s what I loved most.”

Given the significance of the night, she knew her fashion choices would have to be just as meaningful. “I approach fashion for awards ceremonies as an opportunity to express my creativity,” Anitts says. “It’s more than just what you’re wearing, it’s a chance to tell a story through looks in a way that aligns with the message you’re trying to send as an artist.” For both her carpet and performance attire, she chose impactful red looks, one of which spoke to her home country.

First on the carpet, Anitta wore a sculptural corset and skirt from Schiaparelli’s fall 2022 collection. “I loved this dress from the moment I saw it walking down the Schiaparelli runway at their Paris couture show,” says Anitta. “I knew I needed to wear it.” The star was drawn to the theatrical details, especially the 3D heart that strategically covered her left side. “I especially loved the detailing on the heart, how it covers my chest like veins,” says Anitta. “The vein detailing over my heart signifies my love for Brazil.”

For her performance of “Envolver,” Anitta changed into a red mesh and crystal bodysuit by the Italian streetwear label GCDS, while her dancers wore slinky black pieces from the emerging label Andrea Adamo. “Beautiful and intricate detailing always appeals to me, and that was reflected in both my carpet and performance looks,” says Anitta. “Clearly, I love the color red!”

The evening was about more than her fashion choices, however. “It was such an honor to represent Brazil, and make history,” says Anitta. “I also loved being there to show support to my other amazing and creative friends who were at the show.” She hopes fans will continue the dance energy by listening to her deluxe edition of her album Versions of Me, which was released this week. “I got to collaborate with some incredibly impressive artists [on it],” says Anitta, “and I am proud to share it with the world.”

Below, a closer look at Anitta’s VMAs night.

All smiles heading back to my dressing room from stage.

Ended the night on a high winning the moon person for “Best Latin.” So fulfilling to represent my country as the first Brazilian artist to be recognized for a solo project in VMA history. Thank you for coming along with me tonight!
