Reese Witherspoon captured the audience’s hearts, and her career exploded after she tamed Ryan Phillipe’s cold heart in 1999’s Cruel Intentions. Since then, she has been one of the most lovable and sought-after actresses for pure-of-heart roles in romantic comedies for over 20 years, starring with names like Jennifer Aniston, Owen Wilson, Tom Hardy, and Chris Pine. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the actress is teaming up with an unexpected company, Build-A-Bear, for a new movie based on one of the most classic and beloved children’s stories, Goldilocks and the Three Bears

According to the report, Reese Witherspoon and her co-owner Sarah Harden’s production company, Hello Sunshine, will be teaming with Build-A-Bear to bring Goldilocks and the Three Bears to the big screen for the first time. The film will be the first feature from Hello Sunshine’s kids and animation division and will portray Goldilocks as a strong female character; there is no word yet on if they will cast an unknown or go with an established actor to voice the project. Witherspoon and Hello Sunshine’s head of kids and animation, Claire Curley, will executive produce Goldilocks and the Three Bears with Sharon Price John of Build-A-Bear and Foundation Media Partners’ Patrick Hughes.

Reese Witherspoon founded Hello Sunshine in 2016 but wrapped an earlier production company she owned into it, so she has been the owner of a production company for the last decade. Films completed under her companies are Wild (Witherspoon and Laura Dern), Gone Girl (Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike), Hot Pursuit (Witherspoon and Sophia Vergara), Lucy in the Sky (Natalie Portman and Jon Hamm), and the recent success of Where the Crawdads Sing. The company also has seen a fair amount of success on the small screen with Big Little Lies (Witherspoon, Nicole Kidman, and Shailene Woodley), The Morning Show (Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston), and Little Fires Everywhere (Witherspoon and Kerry Washington).

While Build-A-Bear Workshop is well-known by anyone that has frequented a mall in the last 20 years, Build-A-Bear Entertainment has flown under the radar, but has been in production even longer than Reese Witherspoon’s production companies. Their projects reach all the way back to 2006 with the animated adventures of Curious George (Jeff Bennett and Frank Welker), Wild Kratts (Kris and Martin Kratt), and Honey Girls (Ashanti, Ava Grace, and Aliyah Mastin). They have also been involved with some made-for-tv Christmas movies, including 2020’s Deliver by Christmas and 2021’s Christmas CEO.

Goldilocks and the Three Bears will be the first big-budget adaptation for the children’s story following a young girl who finds a cabin in the woods and enters for shelter, discovering that the porridge is either too hot, too cold, or just right, and the beds are either too hard, too soft, or just right. There is no word yet on whether the animated feature will be 2D or 3D. Still, the combination of Reese Witherspoon and an established animation company (with a bit of history in bringing bears to the masses in entertaining ways) means this could be one of the biggest kids’ movies of the year.
