Idris Elba’s Detective Leaves London In Luther Movie First-Look Images

Two first-look images emerge from Netflix’s upcoming film Luther, which sees Idris Elba reprising the title role from the iconic BBC detective series.

New images from the upcoming Luther movie reveal Idris Elba’s return as the iconic character. Luther originally began its life as a TV series, airing on BBC One for five seasons between 2010 and 2019. Elba played the detective John Luther, who must work with the murderer Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson) to help solve a variety of cases.

Today, Empire shared two first-look images at the film follow-up to Luther, which wrapped production this Spring. The first shows the detective stalking across a barren snowy landscape that likely mimics the heightened drama and stakes of the film’s plot. The second is a closer look at Elba back in his iconic Luther getup. Check out the full-size images below:

Everything We Know About The Luther Movie

As these images reveal, the film will be transplanting Luther from his headquarters in London into a grander adventure. There will be a broader scope with more action and higher stakes, but Elba promises that the project will maintain the more low-key grittiness that has charmed fans of the original Luther series for over a decade. They will take advantage of Luther’s new surroundings to explore a new side of his personality, deepening the character that viewers have come to know and love without substantially changing the flavor of what he does when it comes to his detective work.

So far, further details of the plot are being kept tightly under wraps. The film, which will debut on Netflix, does not currently have an official release date, though it will most likely be debuting sometime in 2023. This is especially likely considering the fact that they have kick-started the film’s promotional machine with these new images from the Luther film, and Netflix doesn’t usually run overlong publicity campaigns. It’s even possible that the movie will debut before summer 2023, though at this point it’s anybody’s guess.

The remaining known details of Luther include the fact that the screenplay was written by series creator Neil Cross, with the movie being directed by Jamie Payne. In addition to directing four episodes of the original series, Payne has extensive television directing experience with series including The AlienistNew Amsterdam, and Outlander. In addition to Elba returning as Luther, the film will also feature Dermot Crowley reprising his role as DSU Martin Schenk, along with an ensemble that includes Jess Liaudin, Cynthia Erivo, and iconic motion capture performer Andy Serkis, who has most recently been spotted in the Disney+ Star Wars series Andor.
