Tom Cruise Had Colorful Encouragement For Emily Blunt On Edge Of Tomorrow
Tom Cruise had a colorful and expletive-laden piece of encouragement for co-star Emily Blunt on the set of Edge of Tomorrow, reveals Blunt.
Edge of Tomorrow star Emily Blunt recalls Tom Cruise’s colorful words of advice to her on set. The 2014 sci-fi epic Edge of Tomorrow featured Cruise and Blunt as soldiers in a war against an alien race called the Mimics, with Brendan Gleeson and Bill Paxton in supporting roles as their fellow military personnel. Directed by Doug Liman, the time travel movie (an adaptation of the Japanese novel All You Need Is Kill)‘s tagline “Live Die Repeat” is a reference to its original take on the premise of time loops, which are eventually utilized as a tool to defeat the aliens before they can slaughter the human race.
During an appearance on the Smartless podcast hosted by Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett, Blunt recalled the rigorous nature of filming Edge of Tomorrow, revealing an on-set injury during an aerial stunt. Even outside the stunt work, the actor stated that “the training was intense” for every aspect of the film due to the sci-fi movie’s bulky wardrobe. Blunt explained that the huge, robotic costumes the actors sport in the film were not created with CGI, with the filmmakers instead opting to “do it practically and in a tactile way,” leading to the approximately 85-pound suit that Blunt was required to wear. The actor confessed that the first time she put on the suit, she worried that she wouldn’t be able to get through filming and cried in front of her co-star Cruise, who had a profane response that was laughed off by Blunt, helping her get through the rest of the shoot. See Blunt’s account below:
“[Blunt’s 85 lb costume] was so heavy. The first time I put it on I just started to cry in front of Tom and he didn’t know what to do. He just stared at me. I was like, ‘Tom, I’m not sure how I’m going to get through this shoot,’ and just started to cry. I said, ‘I’m just feeling a bit panicky about the whole shoot.’ He just stared at me for a long time, not knowing what to do, and he goes, ‘Come on, stop being such a p—y, okay?'”
Will Edge of Tomorrow Get A Sequel?
Despite the intensity of filming, Blunt’s comments show that she and Cruise were able to build a rapport as co-stars, which is promising in terms of the potential of each actor’s return for a sequel. Edge of Tomorrow earned critical acclaim, with viewers praising the performances of the leads, the direction, the exciting execution of the premise and action scenes, and the effects utilized to create the suits, aliens, and other elements of the film. As early as 2015, talks of a sequel were reported, with Cruise and Liman attached to the project and Blunt’s involvement later confirmed in 2017.
Though initial updates were promising, the reported sequel Live Die Repeat and Repeat was put on hold due to scheduling issues and rewrites, with the COVID-19 pandemic causing further delays to the project, which Blunt previously described as having an “amazing” script. Unfortunately, Blunt’s most recent update on the potential Edge of Tomorrow sequel was that the film would likely be too expensive to make post-pandemic. However, there may yet be hope for audiences of the unique sci-fi film, with a television show reportedly in development.
Village Roadshow Pictures revealed the news that Warner Bros. was in the process of creating a television series based on Edge of Tomorrow, but not much is known about the potential project, with the involvement of the original stars remaining a mystery. An Edge of Tomorrow television reboot or spinoff is an intriguing possibility, though it’s unlikely that the large budget required by a sci-fi project of Edge of Tomorrow‘s proportions would be sustainable in that medium, which could work since previous sequel updates described the next installment as smaller and more character-driven. Whether Blunt and Cruise will reunite for an Edge of Tomorrow sequel is still unknown, but each star has expressed interest, which bodes well for an eventual next chapter in the franchise.
