Few would have thought that Wednesday Season 2 would be one of the most anticipated seasons we’ve had in a while, but here we are. Born from the creative mind of cartoonist Charles Addams and cemented into pop culture by actor Christina Ricci in the 1990s, the character of Wednesday Addams has seen a resurgence of popularity with the Netflix television series Wednesday. And that’s putting it mildly.
Embodied by Jenna Ortega during Wednesday Addams’s obscure teenage years, Wednesday has become a showcase of supernatural visual effects and talented acting abilities from the ensemble cast’s young performers.
Let’s take a look at everything we know about Wednesday Season 2.
WEDNESDAY SEASON 2 HAS YET TO BE CONFIRMED
It should come as no surprise that Wednesday has surpassed Stranger Things as the record holder of most hours viewed in a single week for an English-language Netflix series, per Variety.
But even with that, Wednesday has yet to be renewed by Netflix for a second season. The show’s popularity amongst subscribers almost guarantees that the series will not become a one-season wonder. But the big question is where will it happen?
NETFLIX MIGHT LOSE THE RIGHTS TO WEDNESDAY TO AMAZON
Wednesday has become so popular for Netflix that it currently rivals Squid Game regarding hours watched on the streamer. Much of the show’s success comes from Jenna Ortega’s take on the famously macabre character and creating a space for herself in the genre after starring in the Scream franchise.
But while the show is something Netflix aims to keep going into the future, the streamer might not have a choice, due to it being a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer product.
Unfortunately for Netflix, Deadline reports that Amazon acquired Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in a recent transaction, and the rights to Wednesday might shift to Amazon. Wednesday Season 2 might premiere on Prime Video rather than Netflix as a result. That is unless Netflix strikes a deal with Amazon to keep the series where it is.
Regardless of what streamer ends up distributing Wednesday Season 2, producers of the series are reportedly already in the process of securing writers and filming locations for a new season in hopes of a smooth transition to Amazon Studios, and a season renewal will most likely take place in the new year.
GWENDOLINE CHRISTIE, CATHERINA ZETA-JONES, AND LUIS GUZMAN COULD ALL RETURN
Gwendoline Christie was once known for her role as Brienne of Tarth in HBO’s Game of Thrones and has successfully transitioned onto Netflix content, playing Lucifer in The Sandman. But her part as Larissa Weems on Wednesday gave her much attention.
Playing the headmaster of Nevermore Academy, where Wednesday Addams attends along with the other outcasts, Christie’s Larissa Weems is heavily involved in Wednesday’s pursuits of a monster killing students of the school and sees her demise in the process.
However, a popular character like Larissa Weems might come back in some fashion in Wednesday Season 2, possibly through flashbacks due to her relationship with a young Morticia Addams, played by Catherine Zeta-Jones.
Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzmán play Morticia and Gomez Addams, Wednesday’s inappropriate parents. Seen in just a handful of episodes in Wednesday Season 1, despite a shady past and secrets revealed, their characters might see more screen time in season 2 if a renewal comes to fruition. Deadline reports that season 2 of the series might see more Addams family members, with Miles Millar confirming that they have “just touched the surface with those characters.”
CHRISTINA RICCI IS UNLIKELY TO RETURN
Wednesday is notable for depicting many characters that initially debuted in the comic strip by Charles Addams, but the series needed a true alumnus of the franchise to help pass the torch to Jenna Ortega and company.
Christina Ricci’s continued appearance in the franchise since she first starred as the character of Wednesday Addams in the early 1990s is a welcome surprise to fans. Ricci costarred in The Addams Family and Addams Family Values, helping to launch her young career.
With the exception of the season finale of Wednesday, Christina Ricci’s character of botany teacher Marilyn Thornhill at Nevermore Academy is nostalgic to her early days in The Addams Family universe.
But, the character proves to be dastardly and a threat to Wednesday Addams and her new friends. So she must be stopped at all costs. It is unlikely that Ricci will appear in future seasons of the show because of how the season concluded, but it is always a possibility in the supernatural world.
WEDNESDAY SEASON 2 COULD KEEP MANY OF THE SAME LOCATIONS
Wednesday season 1 wrapped up production in Romania earlier this year and showcased a number of well-known actors who claimed significant screen time in the eight-episode season. The series has been lauded for its spooky locales and production design, primarily due to Tim Burton’s influence and signature filming style.
If Wednesday is renewed for season 2, regardless if it debuts on Netflix or Prime Video, it is expected that filming will resume in similar locations to keep a consistent tone.
WEDNESDAY ADDAMS’S RELATIONSHIPS MAY EVOLVE
In Wednesday Season 1, Wednesday Addams develops feelings for Hunter Doohan’s barista character, Tyler Galpin, but it turns out that Tyler is a bit of a monster to her in the end.
In Wednesday Season 2, it is more than likely that Wednesday might have a different romantic interest as she continues to traverse her way through young adulthood amongst various outcasts.
Though they each have male significant others in the first season, some fans believe that Wednesday and her roommate Enid Sinclair (Emma Myers) should get together romantically in Wednesday Season 2.
Jenna Ortega has remarked on her desire to depict Wednesday as bisexual and acknowledges that Wednesday and Enid would be a couple in a perfect world. 20-year-old Ortega has been a vocal supporter of the LGBTQ+ community, and portraying Wednesday Addams as bisexual would be part of an overarching plan to make Wednesday more evolved in her relationships.
The first season sees Wednesday forging various paths and making friends for the first time, especially a quasi-sisterly bond with Enid, which could change as the two grow closer in the future, according to Collider.
WEDNESDAY SEASON 2 COULD MOVE ON FROM NEVERMORE
At this point, it’s anyone’s guess as to the premise of a potential Wednesday Season 2, but one thing is for sure, it will be very different from season 1. During the season finale on Netflix, Nevermore Academy closes for the remainder of the semester, and several characters are killed or detained by police.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunners Miles Millar and Alfred Gough confirm that having the school closed opens up multiple opportunities for Wednesday and her friendships to change over time, and the dynamic that Wednesday has with her mother, Morticia, could evolve as well.
WEDNESDAY IS A CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED SMASH HIT
Breaking records for Netflix since it debuted on the platform on Thanksgiving weekend this year, Wednesday has become the second most-watched English-language television show in the streamer’s history. As the holiday season approached, Wednesday’s popularity had barely taken a hit, but it was recently dethroned from the number one spot by the release of Emily in Paris Season 3.
Accounting for its standing with critics and audiences alike, Rotten Tomatoes currently ranks Wednesday with 71% on its Tomatometer and an Audience Score of 86%.
Outside of ratings and praise from critics, Wednesday has been accumulating nominations from well-regarded groups during awards season. Jenna Ortega recently received a nomination for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Television Series Musical or Comedy, while the freshman series received a nomination for the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series in a Musical or Comedy.
