House of the Dragon writer Sara Hess teases season 2’s “Blood and Cheese” episode, which promises to be a brutal and graphic revenge story. House of the Dragon premiered on HBO in August and recently wrapped up season 1. The prequel series is set about 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones when the Targaryens are in power. However, the House Targaryen faces internal conflict when the question arises of whom will succeed King Viserys I Targaryen (Paddy Considine) to the Iron Throne. Just days after the show premiered, it was renewed for season 2, which is expected to release sometime in 2024. While the season is still in early development, some details have surfaced, and one planned episode is particularly interesting.

As reported by VarietyHouse of the Dragon season 2 is confirmed to have a “Blood and Cheese” episode. Fans who have read George R. R. Martin’s Fire & Blood novel, on which the show is based, will be familiar with the term and know that it means horror. For those unfamiliar with it, Blood and Cheese were nicknames given to two characters in the book who took bloody and brutal revenge on the royal family. Hess has teased that fans won’t be “disappointed,” meaning that viewers are likely in for an extremely brutal and bloody tale in season 2.

House Of The Dragon’s Blood & Cheese Story Explained

The foundation for House of the Dragon‘s Blood and Cheese story was already laid in season 1. At the end of the season, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen’s (Emma D’Arcy) and Ser Laenor Velaryon’s (John Macmillan) second-born son, Lucerys (Elliot Grihault) is killed. While the death was seemingly accidental, the sons of Rhaenyra’s stepmother, Queen Alicent (Olivia Cooke), were involved in the incident. Whether accidental or not, Rhaenyra is livid and will be seeking revenge. “Blood and Cheese” will be an old-fashioned and gruesome “an eye for an eye, a son for a son” kind of story.

Blood & Cheese Can Put The Red Wedding To Shame

The Game of Thrones franchise has had graphic and traumatizing episodes before. In particular, episode 9 in season 3, “The Red Wedding, has stood out as one of the franchise’s most notorious and shocking episodes. The episode, which saw a marriage celebration turn into a full-blown massacre with numerous fatalities, stood out to viewers both because of how unexpected and how violent it was. It wasn’t just the graphic violence that made the scene so impactful, but also the emotion within it. Numerous beloved characters who the show had established as heroic in viewers’ minds were killed in a gruesome manner with nearly no notice. However, “Blood and Cheese” might finally challenge the notorious legacy of “The Red Wedding”.

“Blood and Cheese” will be markedly different from “The Red Wedding” in that it will feature fewer deaths, however, it is bound to increase the shock factor just because of the personal level of the vengeance story. House of the Dragon season 1 established the personal and deep level of connection that Rhaenyra and Alicent shared when they were girls, and even as stepmother and stepdaughter, they got along well enough. It will be difficult to stomach the gruesome revenge that Rhaenyra and her cohorts take on people they once considered family. Needless to say, the House of the Dragon‘s “Blood and Cheese” episode could put “The Red Wedding” to shame as it ups the trauma factor by making the murders so personal.
