Who is Bugzy Malone? Gemma Owen’s ‘new love interest’

It was recently revealed that Grime Star Bugzy Malone was reportedly dating Love Island’s Gemma Owen.

The 32-year-old rapper, real name Aaron Davies, was said to have enjoyed a string of dates with the 19-year-old dressage rider and despite their 13-year age gap, the couple have the blessing of her family.

Their romance comes just two months after Gemma’s split from Love Island co-star Luca Bish, 23.

So who exactly is the handsome music star that Gemma has coupled up with?

Bugzy hails from Crumpsall, Manchester and had a difficult start in life having grown up in poverty-stricken household, many members of whom were criminals.

The rapper, who had not met his biological father as a child, then became embroiled in criminal activities at aged just 11, eventually ending up in prison at just 16-years-old. 

After leaving prison at 17, he then took up boxing in an a attempt to distract himself from the life of crime and move into a different career path.

He began rapping with his pals when they met up to hang out or commit crimes, receiving the name ‘Bugz’ aged just 13 from a gang, before it was later changed to ‘Bugzy Malone’ during his prison stint.

As well as taking boxing seriously after leaving prison, he also began to focus on his music too, going on to release his debut mixtape, Swaggaman, in 2010.

Music career 

After turning his life around following his tough start, Bugzy Malone went on to become one of the first grime artists to receive commercial success and was hailed as one of the key artists in laying the foundations for the ‘grime revival’.

After releasing his first mixtape, the star began doing freestyles for the YouTube channels ‘KODH TV’ and ‘Grime Daily’, before going on to release his second mixtape ‘Why So Serious’ in 2011.

The lead single from album Hip Hop Heavy Metal was released in September 2011, with the video going on to garner an impressive 1.5million views on YouTube.

Bugzy went on to release more mixtapes over the years including ‘Lost in Meanwhile City’ (2012) and ‘Journal of an Evil Genius’ (2015)., before his Spitfire freestyle on JDZmedia garnered him popularity outside his native Manchester.

His first official track, Watch Your Mouth, was released in June 2015, which had immense popularity and was played on several UK radio stations and TV networks. 

Bugzy’s first charting single Through The Night with DJ Luck and MC Neat, was released in May 2017 and reached number 92 in the UK single’s chart.

Since then, Bugzy’s career has continued to grow, with his third album, King of the North, boasting three charting singles and reaching number 4 in the UK album charts. 

Bugzy’s latest album The Resurrection reached an impressive number 4 in the charts, with the rap star also going on to play Glastonbury.

Career highs

As well as a successful music career, Bugzy also fancies himself as a film star recently appeared alongside the likes of Jason Statham and Hugh Grant in Guy Ritchie movie Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre.

Sharing his joy at being part of the movie following a premiere in Dubai this week, Bugzy said on Instagram: ‘As youngsters we would sit wondering how we would ever make a living, and when I say we would watch #Snatch by @guyritchie we would watch it on repeat because just by the way the story was told we felt as if he understood us.

‘Hard to put into words how blessed and grateful I feel to feature in #OperationFortune alongside the likes of @jasonstatham and @plazadeaubrey beating up bad guys

‘It’s ironic because now i’m using my talent to demonstrate to people that also started at rock bottom that all you need is a dream and the balls to march towards it.’

Pushing ahead: As well as a touch of acting, Bugzy is also somewhat of an entrepreneur too, having partnered with Supply & Demand for a fashion line, with their products selling at JD Sports

Bugzy has also appeared in another Guy Ritchie film, appearing as character Ernie in 2019’s The Gentleman.

Brushes with the law

In September 2021, Bugzy appeared in court charged with grievous bodily harm, with Bugzy claiming he was acting in self defence when they broke into his home following black pudding throwing festival. 

He was said to have kicked a man’s head ‘like a football’ and punched another ‘in self-defence’ during the incident.

At the time, he told the court at he said he feared for the safety of his then girlfriend and his mother who were inside the property in Ramsbottom, near Bury. 

The star was later cleared of the charges. 

Quad bike accident 

In March 2020, Bugzy revealed he is ‘lucky to be alive’ after he was seriously injured while riding his quad bike.

The Bruce Wayne hitmaker took to social media from his hospital bed to share his injuries with the world and reassure fans he was ‘ok’ after he was thrown off the vehicle in a collision in Bury, Greater Manchester.

The rapper left dazed and lying on his back on the kerbside from facial injuries after he crashed into an Audi.

Taking to Twitter the musician wrote: ‘They tell me i’m lucky to be alive, I sustained serious injuries and at the time I lost consciousness but what I do remember is the none stop love, and just want to say thanks for all the well wishes and prayers you lot caught me off guard with all the support! #ImOk.’ 

The rapper had been riding on what appeared to be a motorised trike through Manchester when an Audi pulled out of a T-junction giving the grime star no time to react before he ploughed into driver’s door.

Footage from the incident then showed Malone’s bike falling onto its side and he was thrown from his vehicle in front of shocked onlookers who raced to his aid.

The songwriter, famed for his album King Of The North, was left lying on his back on the kerbside with blood pouring from his facial injuries, with one bystander saying it appeared his nose was ‘hanging off’.

Bugzy is very secret about his dating life and has never publicly revealed the name of his ex-fiancée, whom he’s said to have become engaged to in 2019 after nine years of dating.

He proposed during a romantic boat trip to Paris in which he got down on one knee amid a boat trip on the River Siene. 

However, it was speculated that they’d recently split as the engagement video and all other traces of the woman in question has been deleted from his account.

It comes as The Sun reports: ‘Gemma and Aaron have enjoyed a few dates over the past few weeks. 

‘They have told their closest friends they are dating and seem really happy together. Gemma and Aaron are keeping their relationship out of the public eye for now because it is early days.

‘He is really into her and has made it clear how he feels. It is all very new and exciting for both of them but they are taking it slowly.’

MailOnline has contacted a spokesperson for both Gemma and Bugzy for comment.  

It comes after Luca, 23, returned to social media earlier this month, after a break following their split in November, telling fans he took time off to deal with ‘things going in my personal life’.

The reality star said he didn’t want to ‘fake it’ by keeping up with posting while he wasn’t feeling himself.

Sharing a video, Luca said: ‘Merry Christmas, merry New Year. I’m back, I ain’t been feeling myself.

‘I had a few things going on in my personal life and family life and wanted to stay away from socials and not fake it and be around the people that are there for me.
