Wednesday Season 2 Has A Dance Scene Problem

Wednesday’s dance in episode 4 has gone viral and is a staple to the show and its success, but having a dance scene in season 2 may not be worth it.

Netflix’s Wednesday has been renewed for a season 2, but this could create an issue with season 1’s most popular moment, the dance scene. The dance that Wednesday performs at the school dance in episode 4 has gone viral and is one of the most memorable scenes from the show that has been recreated all across social media platforms. However, its popularity sets up issues for season 2.

As fun and inventive as Wednesday‘s dance scene featuring The Cramps’ “Goo Goo Muck” was, the dance felt like it was one in a million, and trying to replicate that feeling just for the sake of it possibly going viral feels cheap. The success of the original Jenna Ortega dance was that it was organic and wasn’t forced. It’s hard to recreate that sense of originality.

Wednesday Season 2 Will Be Expected To Have A Dance Scene Now

Because of the success of Wednesday and the sensation that the dance became, the creators may feel like there is an obligation to one-up the dance scene from season 1. It’s unclear if this is the case, but fans will certainly be on the lookout for it. Audiences know that Wednesday season 2 will see a return to Nevermore Academy, but it would feel a bit repetitive for there to be another big dance that everyone attends.

There are a couple of issues with having another school-wide dance. In Wednesday season 1, the dance set up a lot of different plot points. It set a more romantic turn for Wednesday and Tyler’s relationship, Eugene’s attack in the woods, as well as Lucas’ interactions with Bianca, which later helps the audience see her true colors. It would be disappointing for the show to have another dance just to have another dance when the last one established so many additional plot points. Additionally, it’s extremely unlike Wednesday to dance anywhere else.

Wednesday Season 2 Will Struggle To Top Season 1’s Dance Scene

The dance sequence that Wednesday performs in Wednesday episode 4 was unique and would be hard to top. Wednesday’s actress, Jenna Ortega, choreographed the dance herself, making it feel more organic, and having her do so again may not feel as genuine if she knows what worked the first time. She’s also said in interviews that she felt very self-conscious about the scene which may mean she doesn’t want to choreograph another dance sequence for season 2. Within that vein, it wouldn’t feel right for anyone else except Jenna Ortega to choreograph the dance. If the dance feels anything but genuine and personal to the Wednesday character it won’t be able to measure up to the dance from season 1.

Additionally, the music chosen for Wednesday’s dance was superb, perfectly fitting not only the dance itself but also Wednesday’s character. Finding a song that will pair well like that may be a challenge. Although, the remixes of the dance on TikTok which features a sped-up version of Lady Gaga’s “Bloody Mary” pair well. The challenge isn’t just for the dance to feel authentic, but also to pair it with the right music for the show and the Wednesday character.

Should Wednesday Season 2 Really Try To Repeat The Dance Scene?

The Wednesday creative team might want to take the “if it’s not broken, don’t fix it” route when thinking about the dance sequence. Instead of trying to force a new Wednesday dance on audiences, they might want to focus that energy on something equally creative. It remains to be seen what that might look like, but many of the Nevermore students are artistically gifted, so the options are endless.

If Wednesday season 2 features another dance scene like the one in episode 4, it may come off as predictable, something that season 1 was not. There were plenty of twists and misdirects, and Wednesday’s character was able to surprise audiences again and again. This means if they were to put another dance scene in Wednesday season 2, it could come off as predictable and trying to play safe, and that’s not really fair to how wonderful and original season 1 was.

There’s no denying that the dance sequence from Wednesday season 1 was amazing. The dance was original, interesting, and engaging. The music from Wednesday season 1 and the actual dance created an unforgettable moment within the show. Adding to that the whole episode was a wild ride of attempted murder, love triangles, deception, and red paint being spilled in a scene that was eerily similar to Carrie. This episode was the perfect example of what Wednesday set out to create, something fun, interesting, and inventive.

Whether or not Wednesday season 2 will feature another dance scene like the one in episode 4, “Woe What a Night” remains to be seen. Either way, show creators will face a challenge. Audiences are expecting them to one-up themselves, which isn’t an easy task to do, especially when they’re trying to make it feel organic. If the show goes in a different direction and doesn’t feature a Wednesday dance scene, it may upset some fans who were looking forward to Jenna Ortega’s dancing. No matter what, there will be displeased people, so hopefully the Wednesday writers find something that they feel best fits the narrative of the show and best represents the characters.
