Emilia Clarke starred in Above Suspicion, which is now in the top 10 on Amazon Prime Video.
Emilia Clarke is best known for her role in Game of Thrones, and the success of that growing franchise opened many doors for her career. For example, it led to her starring in the sexy crime thriller Above Suspicion, a movie that very few people saw during its theatrical release. But if you’d like to see Clarke in all of her steamy glory, the film is now streaming on Amazon Prime and has become one of the top 10 films streaming on the platform this week.
Part of what makes this Emilia Clarke thriller so spooky is that it is based on very real, very tragic events. Teenager Susan Smith got involved with a Kentucky drug dealer and, years after she became a fixture in the local drug scene, she became a criminal informant for a young FBI agent named Mark Putnam. However, once the two became involved romantically, it set a series of events in motion that leads to her downfall and an FBI agent getting charged with murder.

As you can tell, these real-life events make for a juicy story, and that’s exactly what author Phillip Noyce thought when he wrote the book that this movie was based on. A movie this ambitious needed some serious star power, and casting Emilia Clarke as the beautiful, romantic, and doomed Susan Smith was a no-brainer. She is joined onscreen by a number of other famous faces, including Johnny Knoxville, Thora Birch, and Jack Huston (who plays the FBI agent who falls in love with Emilia Clarke’s character).
Despite having a star-studded cast led by Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke, the movie’s production ended up being just as doomed as Susan Smith. Filming wrapped back in 2019, but the movie didn’t get released until 2021. Chances are the distributor Lionsgate was trying to find the perfect time to release the film, but they had no way of predicting the COVID-19 pandemic, and when the movie finally did get released, it was simultaneously available on VOD and only grossed a little over $25,000 in theaters.
If we’re being honest, the movie is also not exactly a critical hit. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film currently has a 24 percent critic rating and a 31 percent audience score. In other words, neither critics nor audiences really loved this Emilia Clarke thriller when it was first released.
However, the beauty of streaming is that movies get endless second chances to find their audiences, and that seems to be what happened with Above Suspicion. While critics and audiences may have snubbed the movie when it was released back in 2021, the movie has fought its way into the top 10 movies on Amazon Prime. Clearly, fans are enjoying seeing Emilia Clarke in a big-screen movie, and Game of Thrones fans who have made peace with that awful final season may have found room in their heart to watch Clarke once again.
Of course, those hoping to see more of Emilia Clarke don’t have to settle for simply streaming older movies. She currently has several upcoming roles, and the most exciting one is that she will be appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe miniseries Secret Invasion on Disney+. In that show, she will be playing galactic butt-kicker Abigail Brand, and we can’t help but think spending so many years acting as a warrior queen has been perfect practice for such a role.
