Stranger Things: 5 Biggest Theories That Can Still Come True

Stranger Things season 5 will be the final season of the series. There are a number of different ending theories, and here are 5 of the biggest ones.

Among the continued buzz ahead of Stranger Things season 5 are a number of theories that can still come true in the upcoming season. Since the Stranger Things season 4 finale ended morbidly, with Max in a coma and Hawkins under attack, it is hard to imagine season 5 starting off smoothly. The Duffer brothers have confirmed that season 5 will be not only the last season of Stranger Things but also the darkest season of the show yet. While Stranger Things has its share of light, sweet moments, it is primarily a dark drama about an evil force that wreaks havoc on the poor people of Hawkins.

Likely Stranger Things season 5 won’t release for at least a year which gives the Stranger Things audience plenty of time to speculate on new theories. However, there are a few theories that look to fit narratively with the story that the Duffer brothers are trying to tell. Since Stranger Things became a hit in 2016, the show has exceeded expectations, so finding a way to end a cultural phenomenon that pleases everyone may be very hard to pull off.

Max Is Still Trapped With Vecna

While it seemed that Max escaped Vecna’s grasp at the end of season 5, Max’s consciousness is still in a coma, meaning she died and is likely stuck in the Upside Down with Vecna. Whether Max’s mind or soul is trapped with Vecna, her Kate Bush “Running up that Hill” moment in Stranger Things season 4 was for nothing if she did not escape. Additionally, when Henry killed the kids at the lab, he inferred that his victims stay with him in his mind.

Reddit u/chilicheesedoggo poses that “Eleven will have to go into Henry’s mind to get Max’s soul back.” It seems likely that Eleven will have to risk her life to get Max’s consciousness or soul back where she will have her final showdown with Vecna. Once Eleven gets in Vecna’s mind, she will be able to bring him down and possibly the Upside Down along with him.

Henry Is Eleven’s Father

Henry/Number One was Dr. Brenner’s first test subject and is at the age where he could be Eleven’s biological father. Eleven is the only one whose power even compares to Henry and that could be because she is his daughter. Besides his youth, there isn’t much known about Henry Creel. According to u/kevinr1990’s math, he writes “if Henry Creel was 11 in 1959, that means he was around 31 years old during his showdown with El at Hawkin’s lab, when she blasted him into the Upside Down. El was 9 when this happened, so it’s totally plausible from a sheer timeline/age standpoint that Henry Creel could be Eleven’s biological father.

While the Duffer brothers have revealed Eleven’s father’s biological name Andrew Rich, that is all that is known about him. Eleven’s biological mother is Terry Ives, but Stranger Things has never properly introduced a biological father, although she has had father figures in both Dr. Brenner and Hopper. If Eleven has to face Vecna with that knowledge, she will be even more conflicted about killing her own father. While it makes for great drama, Eleven’s realization that Henry is her real father would likely have her question her own purpose in this world.

Max Will Become A Puppet Of The Upside Down

If Max wakes up from the coma, there is a chance Vecna or another Upside Down villain will take over her body. Stranger Things has a history of Upside Down entities taking over people’s bodies and causing them to do horrific things. Max’s older brother Billy was controlled by malicious forces in Hawkins, so she may also suffer the same fate. Vecna could also use her relationship with her friends to terrorize them and get what he wants.

While it would be sad for Max to die like her brother, it would bring that moment full circle. Additionally, with the Duffer brother’s warning of the darkest season of Stranger Things yet, Max is just one of the many characters that may not survive. After all, no one had successfully escaped Vecna’s grasp before Max, therefore she may’ve never had a chance, to begin with. If her body is taken over, Max may be able to follow her brother’s steps and sacrifice herself to save the group.

Will Is Fated To Destroy The Upside Down

Another theory suggests that since Will created a portal to the Upside Down, he has a psychic connection to Vecna. He can sense Vecna’s presence and Will even confirmed that the Mind Flayer wanted to kill everyone but him. According to Reddit u/strangerwill, “He simply doesn’t want to kill him because he has been wanting a body to use ever since he has been banished to that alternate dimension.” Will may be able to trick Vecna into using his body, only for Will to sacrifice himself to destroy Vecna. In this theory, Will would be fated to destroy the Upside Down, not Eleven as many fans have speculated.

Additionally, the Duffer brothers have confirmed that Will will play a big part in Stranger Things season 5. Stranger Things’ events have not been kind to Will which could mean that he was always destined to die in the Upside Down, since the first season. On a narrative level, the show started with Will’s disappearance, so it may be fitting for Will to be the one who needs to be sacrificed to stop the Upside Down from destroying Hawkins.

Eleven Will Sacrifice Herself

Instead of Will sacrificing himself, Eleven may have to sacrifice herself to save her friends. She is the one who created the Upside Down to trap Henry, so she must be the one to destroy it. After all, as long as Eleven is around, there will always be a connection to the Upside Down and Vecna has shown that he will stop at nothing to destroy Hawkins.

Eleven’s death would be a sad conclusion to the acclaimed series, but Stranger Things has followed the characters through their childhood, it must naturally end for the characters to go into adulthood. With the coming-of-age themes of the show, it would make sense for some of the groups’ growing pains to involve learning to live without Eleven. While El the lovable “weirdo” changed their lives, not all changes are permanent, Eleven may eventually just represent a fond memory of their adventures as children.

Whether Will or Eleven will have to sacrifice themselves to sever the connection to the Upside Down, it will not be revealed for a long time. However, the Duffer brothers have confirmed a time skip, which works with the child actors aging into adulthood. This time skip could confirm or invalidate any of the above theories, but the Stranger Things season 5 time jump can also add more stakes to Hawkins’ destruction. Perhaps, Vecna does win temporarily, but these Stranger Things season 5 theories remain speculation for now.
