Why The Last Of Us Episode 8 Was Bella Ramsey’s Favorite To Shoot

The Last of Us episode 8 was Bella Ramsey’s favorite to shoot, with the Ellie actor now opening up about the challenges and joy of the filming.

Warning: SPOILERS lie ahead for The Last of Us episode 7!

As audiences eagerly await the show’s next chapter, Bella Ramsey reveals that The Last of Us episode 8 was her favorite to film. The most recent episode of the hit HBO series slowed the story down a bit, going back in time to explore Ellie’s backstory and her relationship with Storm Reid’s Riley, namely the fateful night in which they were bitten by an Infected and Ellie learned of her immunity. Though receiving praise for its focus on Ellie, and Ramsey’s performance, there may be a more exciting episode coming around the corner.

In a recent interview with Vogue, Bella Ramsey reflected on her experience making HBO’s The Last of Us. While looking specifically at the filming of the upcoming episode 8, “When We Are in Need,” the Ellie actor revealed it to have been her favorite to shoot, citing the emotional nature of the story in the episode. See what Ramsey shared below:

It was… exhausting. But those were some of my favorite days on set. That sounds really masochistic, but it’s the scenes that break me that I love the most, in a way.

What We Know About The Last Of Us Episode 8

Following the flashback-focused episode 7, The Last of Us episode 8 looks to be returning to the present day story, with Ellie still struggling to find a way to help Joel recover from his stab wound. Her efforts will lead her to meeting Scott Shepherd’s David, a preacher and the leader of a local group of survivors looking to have Ellie join his community. Things will be tense between the two as Ellie distrusts the rest of the gun-toting survivors, whom also are concerned with bringing another “mouth to feed” into the group.

In addition to Shepherd, The Last of Us episode 8 is confirmed to see the long-awaited arrival of Troy Baker as David’s second-in-command, James. Baker is best known for being the original voice and motion-capture actor of Joel, making him one of multiple original stars to return alongside Ellie’s Ashley Johnson, who will be portraying Ellie’s mom in an unknown episode, and Merle Dandridge as Marlene, while original Tommy actor Jeffrey Pierce also appeared as a new character.

With The Last of Us episode 8 trailer largely focused on Ellie and showing Pedro Pascal’s Joel still on the brink of death, it seems likely to be another Ramsey-centered story. Those familiar with the games are sure to understand the exhaustion Ramsey hints to in her comments, but with it unclear where season 1 will end, it will be interesting to see if the episode ends on a major cliffhanger putting Joel on the warpath. Only time will tell when The Last of Us episode 8 premieres Sunday on HBO and HBO Max.
