1 / 19

When Tom Cruise skipped out on the 2023 Oscars, many fans wondered where he could be. His movie Top Gun: Maverick was up for six nominations and it won for Best Sound amid a Best Actor snub. Well, the actor actually had a good reason for not attending and he actually gave fans a sneak peek of what he was up to a few months ago.

In December 2022, the Rain Man star shocked his followers when he dropped an update about his latest project, Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part II. Posting a video with edited clips from filming behind the scenes, Tom also revealed that the newest installment in the franchise will feature a stunt that has been years in the making. What’s more, he revealed that the action-packed move will be “the most dangerous thing he’s ever attempted” for a movie.

“So excited to share what we’ve been working on. #MissionImpossible,” he wrote on Instagram on December 19.

Due to the fact that the Mission: Impossible movies continue to be a favorite amongst viewers, it surprised many to see just how far Tom is testing his limits for an action film. Naturally, they aired their thoughts about it on Instagram.

“The planning and research and dedication is all so impressive. I cannot wait to see it come to life in the movie!!” one person wrote in the comments section. “Incredibly insane, but truly amazing at the same time,” another follower added. “Genius, two words. 👏👏 Can’t wait for this to hit the multiplexes 😍😍,” a different user agreed.

Long story short, Tom’s dedication to filming the next Mission: Impossible film explains why he didn’t attend the 95th Academy Awards. Entertainment Tonight later confirmed this as his reason for not being there, saying that his presence in the U.K. was necessary to complete filming.

So, when exactly will fans get to see Tom perform his latest death-defying stunt? It won’t be too long now. The movie’s official Instagram account recently uploaded a movie poster alongside a projected July 14, 2023 release date.
