Monica Barbaro On Her First Meet With Tom Cruise

The Cathedral actress revealed her first meet with the Mission Impossible star on the sets of Top Gun: Maverick. Barbaro played the role of LT Natasha “Phoenix” Trace. The Lethal Weapon actress as a young face in Hollywood was frozen by meeting the superstar Tom Cruise. Barbaro initially thought that she didn’t get star-struck, but meeting the Endless Love star has surely proved her wrong. The Good Cop star added that she couldn’t feel her legs and even forgot her name just by seeing Cruise in person. Barbaro noted that her co-star Jay Ellis’s reaction made it clear that she had made a big mess. 

“I didn’t think I was. I am not usually star-struck. But it was the day when we were gonna observe you [Tom] watching an F-18 for the first time. We were all standing in the hallway, and kinda being like bros and being cool, we are gonna be fine. He walks down the hallway, and suddenly, I couldn’t feel my legs. He starts shaking hands with everyone in a circle, I was like I’m last. Shakes my hand, looks deep into my eyes, and I forgot my name. I looked across and he was just sort of like is she okay, did we hire the right person? And I look across and I see Jay Ellis, just smiling at me like you are a mess.”

Top Gun: Maverick is a highly anticipated sequel to the 1986 hit film Top Gun. The film stars Tom Cruise in the lead role as Maverick, a skilled fighter pilot who returns to the Navy’s elite fighter weapons school as a flight instructor. Barbaro’s character is described as a highly skilled pilot who is confident in her abilities but also struggles with the pressure to succeed. Barbaro’s performance in the film has been praised by critics, with many saying that she brings a refreshing energy to the film.

“I got to say that Monica is amazing in this movie. It was a long time coming and we took a lot of time finding the right people and the cast is amazing. Monica is just a natural intelligence and presence and talent, to be able to play a female fighter pilot graduate of Top Gun is very impressive.”

It is the performance of the cast that has made Top Gun: Maverick a huge success and commercial hit. The movie was the highest-grossing film in 2022.
