Jim Carrey Would Return To His Most Iconic Role Under One Impossible Condition

n the wake of Jim Carrey announcing his retirement from acting following his role in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, he also revealed that he would return to his most iconic role under a seemingly impossible condition. Everyone knows Jim Carrey from his zany characters and on-point slapstick comedy, but there are none more recognizable than his time portraying Ace Ventura. Ace Ventura and the sequel Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls are arguably some of his most hilarious films. Though he claims he is done acting, he was recently interviewed where he revealed that he would allow an auteur director to bring him back to the character. That auteur would be Christopher Nolan. According to Carrey, “Unless some genius person, director, auteur comes to you with a completely new take on what’s going on, you know. If Chris Nolan came to me and said ‘I want to make Ace Ventura real and I want to do something, you know, something more interesting…’ then I might listen.” This would be insane if it happened.

Jim Carrey ‘Fairly Serious’ About Retiring From Acting: ‘I Have Enough. I’ve Done Enough’

One thing is certain, there is no way that Christopher Nolan would want to make another Ace Ventura film, however, it would be amazing if he did. Nolan certainly brought the world of Batman to a new height, and The Dark Knight is arguably the best superhero film ever made. He elevated the character of Batman to a new level that no one thought possible. Whereas the Tim Burton films were campier, and the following Joel Schumacher films were even more ridiculous, Nolan brought Gotham to realism that hadn’t existed before. However, even Nolan might not be able to make Jim Carrey seem dark and brooding in a “real” Ace Ventura film. Carrey is not devoid of being a brooding actor. The Number 23 and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind proves the man has some great acting chops, so he could potentially turn his most iconic role into something much darker.

Jim Carrey added further about returning to Ace Ventura, commenting on the fact that he doesn’t have a cell left of that character in his body. He also claims that after so long playing a character, the inspiration is long gone. This statement might have some double meaning to it, considering he once wanted to reprise some of his other best roles. Returning to reprise his role as Lloyd Christmas in Dumb and Dumber To did not go over well. The film saw the Farrelly brothers return to write and direct, but the magic was long gone. The film has a 30% critic and 35% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Carrey might be commenting about returning to Ace Ventura as a lesson learned from the failed sequel of Dumb and Dumber. He did return to his role as The Cable Guy in a commercial for this year’s Super Bowl but is certainly not another film.

While it might be strange and fantastic to see another Ace Ventura film, there is no way an auteur director would likely go for it. Christopher Nolan’s films are all thought-provoking masterpiece-level storylines. Ace Ventura is just a wild character that loves animals. Jim Carrey might have to remain retired, but maybe someone else could take on this impossible condition. Crazier things have happened. Maybe someone like David Lynch would call on Carrey and see if he is lying about returning to the character. He might be the only director to want to tackle such a ridiculous film.
