Will There Be an ‘Alice in Borderland’ Season 3 on Netflix? What We Know

It’s all fun and games, and then someone gets hurt. That may be the one sentence that best describes Alice in Borderland, Shinsuke Sato’s sci-fi adaptation for Netflix. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, a handful of the survivors in Tokyo have to play games for their lives. If they win, they get the chance to hopefully evade death again and possibly see their friends die. If they lose, it’s the big laser beam in the sky. Really, it’s always a lose-lose.

Packed with puzzles and elaborate betrayals, few shows will leave you on the edge of your seat like this one. We’ve already covered that ending, but is there going to be a Season 3? Here’s what we know so far.

Will There Be an Alice in Borderland Season 3 on Netflix?

Unfortunately, it seems like this series has reached its end. Season 2 of Alice in Borderland covers the second half of the original manga. Even if Netflix wanted to make more episodes, they would have to get creative.

That being said, there are a couple of Alice in Borderland spinoffs. So if Season 2 really takes off and fans are desperate for more, there’s at least one avenue to make more episodes.

Is Alice in Borderland Based on a Manga?

It certainly is. Haro Aso’s manga of the same name ran in Shōnen Sunday S from 2010 to 2015 before moving over to Weekly Shōnen Sunday in April of 2015. The manga tells the same story as the live-action Netflix series. A young man and his two friends suddenly discover that most of Tokyo has disappeared and that they’re now in a new world known as Borderland. In order to stay in this world and avoid death, they have to play an increasingly difficult series of games. It’s basically children’s games but with the highest stakes imaginable. So far, the first eight volumes in the manga have been translated into English. Volumes 9 and 10 set to be released in March of 2023.

Alice in Borderland the manga ends the same way as the live-action series. But there are also two spinoffs to the original manga that have been released. Alice on Border Road follows a Tokyo school girl who is bored with her ordinary life. One day she wakes up in a desolated version of Kyoto with the Queen of Clubs card in her hand. She’s forced to team up with a group of people with their own cards as they fight their way back to Tokyo. Though Border Road shares elements with Borderland, it’s not entirely clear if it exists in the same universe.

The second, more-direct spinoff is Alice in Borderland: Retry. This time around, we’re playing with game theory. Once again Ryōhei Arisu finds himself in Borderland and has to play a series of games to escape. Only now he has to return for his expectant wife. Between these two spinoffs, this one seems like the better bet if Netflix wanted to continue this series.
