Who won American Idol? Meet Noah Thompson, the Louisa, KY singer who wowed the judges

The 20th season of “American Idol” came to a close Sunday night, and the winner from the final three contestants was crowned.

Noah Thompson, the Louisa, Kentucky, construction worker, received 16 million votes and won the “American Idol” crown, beating fellow contestants Huntergirl and Leah Marlene.

Louisa is a town of around 2,800 in Lawrence County in Eastern Kentucky, right on the West Virginia border. Thompson had no previous musical training or experience and was pushed to try out for the show by his co-worker and friend from Louisa, Arthur Johnson.

During the Top 7 week, Thompson was diagnosed with COVID-19 and gave two performances for “American Idol” from his hotel room. Even with his unusual circumstances, the judges praised his performance and gave him a place in the top 5.

In the three-hour finale on Sunday, Thompson sang a duet with music legend Melissa Etheridge, performed his debut single, “One Day Tonight,” and sang a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m on Fire.”

“It’s a long way from that first audition, buddy,” judge Luke Bryan said to him after his Springsteen cover.

Judge Lionel Richie said that Thompson’s newly developed stage presence takes his singing to the next level.

“You have what is now your stage persona,” he said. “That is called an artist. You have now graduated to that wonderful stage of your life.”

Judge Katy Perry said Thompson sang her favorite Springsteen song.

“You just swooped in and grabbed every heart in America by singing that song,” she said. “You’re just a good guy from Kentucky that might win ‘American Idol.'”

As the winner, Thompson will receive $250,000, a record deal with Hollywood Records and, of course, the title of “American Idol.”
